Did you have (family) help when you gave birth?

Just read the following question over at CreoleinDC's blog:

Did YOU have help when your babies were born? Who came over? Did you go to someone's home?

My daughter was old enough to help me out once her baby brother was born. It wasn't that she couldn't do a great job because to be honest, she really did. The only thing that sucked was, she was still in High School and had a social life which meant it was all on me. I wouldn't have it any other way. I never wanted her to feel like she had to drop her life to take care of her baby brother. She was expected to help around the help and that she did but, overall, the major responsibility was on me! I'm his MOMMY why wouldn't it be? Hah!

My MIL flew out here from New Jersey to help when DJ was born. Since he was a PREEMIE, needless to say, with the help of my dear dear friend Kim S., my MIL was able to get a very cool flight out here because she had to jump a flight OVERNIGHT to be there for me in my time of need. Darrin was in Iraq so it was a no brainer that she would come out to help.

Even though I wasn't a first time mom, there were so many years in between my kids, I FORGOT all about EVERYTHING and believe it or not, it does NOT just come to you. Like the juggling part, yeah that was hard for me. I'm not a MORNING person and guess what, babies could care less about how you are or used to be, once they're here, it's all about THEM!!!

I tried to shower and put the baby in the bouncer next to the shower business. He screamed and hollered. Then I tried to eat breakfast and read the paper and the baby was NOT trying to hear that either. I was a mess trying to figure out what the heck I was doing wrong.

My MIL told me to shower and take care of ME when the baby was sleeping.

OOPS. My bad! She was here for a month. I cried when she left.

Thankfully, I had my MIL to come out here to give her motherly wisdom or I would probably still be trying to get that needed shower. Yikes!

Not long term. My parents and sister came up to help out when Gabe was born. He was a scheduled c-section and that way they could be there to help get the boys to school. Then, since Gabe was born on a Friday, they took the older kids home with them for the weekend.

When Marty and Joey were born, we lived in an itty-bitty apartment and there was no room for anyone to come and stay.

The life saver all three times was that Vic had paternity leave.

My mom stayed a little less than 2 weeks... 50% before delivery 50% after. I wanted her to be there but I didn't need her. She said "well I guess yall don't need me so I'll head back home", lol.

Never try getting anything done when the kids are woke! You'll be forever trying to complete one project!

Now I just plop Jayden in the tub with me, he ain't trying to hear that sit in the bouncer mess either, lol.

My mommy friends had this very discussion today. What a coincidence!

One mom shared how her mother and mother-in-law each came for a week. All she did was sleep and nurse her baby. They coordinated the timing for both her kids. What a blessing!

I on the other hand was the mother who needed a shower and five minutes to herself! My daughter was not keen on being separated from me, and cried on her father's shoulder for the duration of my shower.

My mother came down from MD to NC when we had our first child. I called her when me and my hubby went to the hospital and she started driving down. I was so sad...I had never even changed a diaper before.*lol* I learned quickly. I didn't have any younger brothers or sisters or cousins so I was never exposed to it. She had to show me how to do everything. She stayed for two weeks. My husband's family was in the area so they did help us out, afterwards.

My dad and stepmom came down for a day to help, but that was about all I had. I did OK I think, but MAN it would have been nice to have someone here a bit longer than that!
