Teaching respect one child at a time.

I'm walking through the park past a group of young men on bikes. One of the young men in the group says, excuse me Miss can you tell me where canyon lake is? I told him I'm sorry, I don't know but, she (pointing to my friend that was walking towards our direction) knows. You can ask her. The young man calls over to her and says HEY!

Let me repeat myself. The kid said, HEY! to a grown woman.

Without blinking, I said, that isn't the way to address a woman. The kid said, oops, I'm sorry, excuse me Miss, can you tell me where to find Canyon Lake?

I said now that was much better. I'm so proud of you. My friend knows how I am. I don't play when it comes to respect and young people. I would be a monkey's uncle before I allow a kid to disrespect a grown up in my presence.

I'm sure the kid probably stuck his tongue out at me when I walked away. Whatever. I bet he NEVER forgot that lesson. He better be glad I didn't make him take his hat off when he spoke to a lady. That's my next lesson! I would like to believe his momma taught him better than that. If not, I did. Hah!

Oh, way to go. I am such a stickler for manners and I get so upset with people/kids who don't have any. I hear more and more children saying "What" or "No" to their parents, two things that I would have died had I said to mine.

I am so glad to see someone doing this. I live in a college town and sometimes you wonder what their parents were doing when they were growing up!

I am all for respect and manners especially when dealing with your elders. Kids these days really are lacking those qualities. Sad.

Girl he appreciated it, that's why he responded so quickly and said "ooops." I noticed that children LOVE to know that somebody else care about them beside their mamma's. LOL

You did the right thing. it takes guts because you don't know how teens will act these days. either way, you know he thought about it and hopefully, will think before he says "Hey!" to another woman.

Yup! I school the kids at Sachel's school all the time. They are not allowed to talk to me like I am their peer...they probably hate my a** but that's how this mommy rolls. lol.
